They are used for management of venous insufficiency and venous ulcers to reduce edema and aid return of venous blood to the heart. Physician order should specify level of compression. Tubular elastic compression devices are indicated for the management of venous hypertension, venous ulcers to reduce edema and aid return of venous blood to the heart. They can also be used to provide mechanical support to joints or to minimize pressure and shear on the skin.
Tubular elastic compression devices are contraindicated for arterial insufficiency, intermittent claudication, ischemia, uncontrolled congestive heart failure, acute dermatitis, weeping dermatosis, and cutaneous sepsis.
